Vinny Lecavalier about Coming to Philly

(Philadelphia) There were a lot of questions about what will the Philadelphia Flyers do once Free Agency started on July 5, The Flyers made a big splash in Free Agency when they signed former Tampa bay lightning center Vincent Lecavalier to a 5-year/$22.5M deal. The Flyers made it official today when Lecavalier signed his new contract with the Flyers.

Vinny Lecavalier joined Brian Startare on 97.5 The Fanatic on Saturday July 6 about what lead him to come to Philadelphia.

How quick did the process take for you to find a new team?

Vinny Lecavalier “I was not shocked that the lighting were going to buy me out, when you hear the words Buyout, it kind of hurts, after a couple of days, I started to think of teams where I wanted to go to”

How quickly did you pick a team & why the Flyers?

Vinny Lecavalier “I meet with 10-12 teams a day before the draft and a lot of people from teams, When I meet with the flyers, they went right to the top with GM Paul Holmgren & Head Coach Peter Laviolette, Then I made my decision & told my agent that the Flyers is the team I want to go to”

About possible playing wing with Giroux and Voracek?
Vinny Lecavalier “I would love to play on the wing alongside Giroux and Voracek”

How do you stay consistent?
Vinny Lecavalier “In Tampa I was lucky to play with Martin St Louis & Vinny Prospal, I was more a passer, they made me from going from scoring 30 to 50 with the opportunities they gave me, instead of having 3-4 shots, it increased to 5-6 shots on goal, “I Wanted to be a part of the young core that is getting better each year”

What do remember about playing the Flyers in 2004 Eastern Conference Finals?
Vinny Lecavalier “Once we found out we play the flyers,  I sad “O BOY”, it was a great series, that was the toughest series I ever played, going back & forth, I try to match the play of Keith Primeau , great memories from that series

About playing under John Tortorella & looking forward to Peter Laviolette?
Vinny Lecavalier “I spent 7 years with Tortorella, he was very tough on me, after we won the cup, he calmed down, he was very demanding, he brought my game up to another level, I never played for Peter Laviolette, he is tough & holds players accountable, he lets the players control the game & playing smart & making decision, you want to be able to use your instances when you’re on the ice.

What number will you be wearing?
Vinny Lecavalier “I’m going to wear No.40, it’s the closest thing to No.4 I could get”
