Villanova takes down Penn at Palestra

Philadelphia PA: On Saturday January 17 from Cathedral of College Basketball The Palestra on the Campus of University of Pennsylvania, , a big 5 encounter took place as the Penn Quakers hosted the number 5 Villanova Wildcats. Villanova comes into game off a win over Xavier on January 14 while Penn enters matchup with Villanova off a win over Niagara. The game was broadcasted on ESPN3.

Villanova won the tip to start the game and scored the games first points as Dylan Ennis hits 3 pointer for early 3-0 lead. Penn would answer right back and scored basket & foul by Matt Howard. Villanova would jump out to a 16-8 lead with 10:48 left in 1st half, both teams had some good opportunities but could not connect. Penn would make a run late in the 1st half and they would tie the game at 19 on 3 pointer by Antonio Woods. The Palestra was rocking and there was a certain feel that this would be one of those Old school tight big 5 games that happens at the Palestra. Villanova would take a 23-21 lead into half. there were some notables in attendance including Phillies President David Montgomery, former Governor of PA Ed Rendell & the Taney Dragons Little League team.

Penn got the ball to begin the 2nd half and keep this game a backyard brawl and Penn Antonio Woods hits another big 3 pointer which cut the Villanova lead to 33-32 with 13:01 left in the 2nd half. Penn would keep this game very close, but could not take advantage of it. Both teams had series of runs and the crowd was getting into it. Villanova got the lead up to 10 at 51-41 with 3:50 left, Penn ran out of gas to make a run to try to get the game into overtime but Villanova would take control and defeat Penn 62-47 in front of a Sell out crowd of 8,722 at Palestra.
