The Hype Already Building In Philadelphia
- Updated: September 12, 2013
It took all of one game for Chip Kelly’s squad to be the talk of the NFL. Philadelphia fans are suddenly re-emerging after a season to forget, and fantasy football owners are fighting on the waiver wire over guys still available. Sure, there are still 15 games left on the regular season schedule, but can Philadelphia’s offense take the NFL by storm?
On Monday Night, the Eagles faced off against a strong Washington Redskins and took over from the very beginning. At one point, it was 33-7 in favor of Philadelphia. The Redskins made a valiant effort to comeback late, but their rally came up just short.
The almost-comeback did expose a few shortcomings for the hottest team in the NFL. For one, the offense slowed a bit after a torrid pace. Their defense folded up at times as well, which will put pressure on the offense during the entire season if that continues.
However, few even expected the Eagles to compete with an offense that many labelled as nothing more than a gimmick. Fantasy football owners were hesitant to take their disappointing star players, but now they look like steals. LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson in particular are back to being fantasy football stars, and even Michael Vick is creeping back up to starter status.
Philadelphia has a tough road ahead of them, especially as more film gets out there on the offense they run. Much like a new baseball pitcher with unique stuff, the challenge will be catching teams the second time around with the offense and pace. However, the Eagles do have the talent to be major players all season long. They should not be discredited in any way after an impressive opening week win. The excitement is back in Philadelphia, and Kelly hopes to keep it that way all season long.
