St John’s Defeats Saint Joes at Buzzer in NIT

(Philadelphia PA) — On Tuesday March 19 from Hagan Arena on the Campus of Saint Joseph’s University, The Saint Joseph’s Hawks took on St john’s Red Storm in first Round of NIT) National Invitation Tournament. Saint Joseph’s came into the NIT game off a loss to VCU on march 15 in Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals. St John’s came into the game off a loss to Villanova on march 13 in Big East 2nd  Round. The game was broadcasted nationally on ESPNU with Mike Crispino, Bob Valvano calling the action. St John’s starts the game with the ball, the first points of game came from Saint Joseph’s Carl Jones for two points, St John’s first points came from Jakarr Sampson for two points, it was a very tight and at times sloppy play by both teams in the first half. Saint Joseph’s took a 32-26 lead over St John’s into halftime.

Leading scorer for St John’s in first half was JaKarr Sampson with 8 points, for Saint Joseph’s it was Carl Jones with 12 points.

The Hawks began with the ball to begin the second half. The hawks lead the entire second half until St John’s Amir Garrett hit back to back baskets with under 3 minutes to St John’s their second lead of game. Saint Joseph’s tied the game at 61 with 9 seconds left with two foul shots by Ronald Roberts. St John’s had the ball for the final shot & Dominic Pointer hits the game winning basket at the buzzer, St Johns wins 63-61 ending Saint Joseph’s season. St John’s moves on to face Virginia in the 2nd round of NIT.

St John’s: Leading Scorer was JaKarr Sampson with 16 points, 5 rebounds, Dominic Pointer had 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3-3 from 3pt range

Saint Joseph’s:  Leading scorer was Carl Jones with 21 points, 4 reounds, 3-4 from 3pt range, Langston Galloway had  16 points, 5 rebounds, 4-8 from3pt range
