Quakers take down Explorers to open Big 5 Play

Philadelphia PA:  When you think of College Basketball in Philadelphia, you think of the BIG 5, which is (Temple, Penn, LaSalle, Villanova & Saint Joseph’s). The Big 5 Scheduled got started on Thanksgiving eve at “the Cathedral of College Basketball” The Palestra on the campus of University of Pennsylvania as the Penn Quakers hosted the LaSalle Explorers. The Penn Quakers come into game with a record of 3-1 and coming off a loss to Washington on November 21 while LaSalle enter game against Penn with a undefeated record of 3-0 and off a win over Lafayette on November 23.

LaSalle won the tip to start the game & they would score the games first points from a Cleon Roberts for the early 2-0 lead, Penn would answers on their first possession of the game with Matt Howard makes basket & got fouled, would miss the basket. The Quakers would take their first lead of the game on basket by Darien Nelson Henry which would be a recurring thing of the night for him. LaSalle would open up a 10 point lead at 30-20 with 3:21 left in the half. Penn would go on a run to cut the lead down to 3 and Penn had all the momentum heading into halftime after LaSalle was in full control of the 1st half. LaSalle took a 32-29 lead into halftime. Cleon Roberts Leads LaSalle with 14 points in 1st half while Penn Darien Nelson Henry leads with 13 points.

Penn got ball to start the 2nd half and they would turn it over and LaSalle would make them pay as Jordan Price hits 2 foul shot to increase the lead to 34-29, Penn Sam Jones hits 3 pointer to tie game at 34. LaSalle would have no answer for Darien Nelson Henry as he would take over and put up 18 2nd half points for a game high of 31 points, Sam Jones would also burn LaSalle with his 3 point shooting as Penn would cruise to a 80-64 win to give Penn their first win against LaSalle since 2007 and did it infront of a crowd of 3,122. Penn improves to 4-1 on the season and get ready to play at Lafayette on November 29 while LaSalle suffers its first loss on the season to go 3-1 and they prepare for at Rowan on November 28.
