Philadelphia boasts many great golf courses, but in this article I want to tell you more about some of its finest public golf courses; these courses are more accessible and affordable to golfers wanting a great game of golf at a reasonable price. I will be focusing on Philly’s top 5 public golf courses and give you some general info about the club, the course as well as some contact information. Ready? Here we go…
1. The Golf Course at Glen Mills – Glen Mills, PA

The Golf Course at Glen Mills is located in Pennsylvania’s historic Thornbury Township. It has won many awards and hosted prestigious tournaments such as the US Amateur Qualifier in 2009 and the US Open Qualifier in 2006. The golf course was designed by Bobby Weed who has done a great job to work with the natural beauty of the Glen Mills area as well as provide a good challenge for both amateur and pro golfer.
Glen Mills offers a full service, 18-hole golf facility including multiple top quality practice areas. It is the only golf course in the Philadelphia area featuring 12-minute starting times. You can also enjoy a casual lunch in their English Style Grill room or outside on the open-air decks overlooking the Golf Course. 2. Scotland Run Golf Course – Williamstown, NJ

Scotland Run is a Golf Digest 4 1/2-Star winner and its stunning golf course is a wonderful blend between quarry, wooded and links-style holes. Expansive waste areas and daunting cliff areas form part of this unique golf course.
The course is only 20 minutes from downtown Philadelphia and 45 minutes from Atlantic City. It is open to the public year-round for daily-fee play, group outings & banquets. Be sure to book your time-time soon at this wonderful course, which was also voted ‘Top 50 Public Courses in the country’ by the readers of Golf World in their annual Readers’ Choice Awards in 2009 and 2010.
3. Wyncote Golf Club – Oxford, PA

Wyncote Golf Club is not only one of the best courses in Philadelphia, but also one of the finest golf courses in the country.
This “heathlands” style course was designed by award-winning architect Brian Ault and offers the finest playing conditions you will find anywhere in Philly. The course with its mounded bunkers, windy rises and wetlands, reminds one of a typical Scottish links course. The top quality bent grass greens throughout, makes putting an absolute pleasure! Four different tee placements allow every age and skill level to enjoy their trip around this great course.

4. Downingtown Country Club – Downingtown, PA

This par-72 golf course was built between 1965 and 1967 and designed by George Fazio who was runner-up to Ben Hogan in the 1950 U.S Open.
Downing Country Club is located in Chester and the layout of the course reflects many of the great features of classic Philadelphia golf courses. The tricky greens, challenging bunkers, and open, rolling fairways offer a fair test of golf for golfers of all skill levels. The golf course is in great condition right throughout the year.
After your round you can choose between fine and casual dining in the club’s elegant dining rooms. The dining rooms also offer stunning views of the club’s beautiful lake and lighted fountain. The food is wonderfully prepared and the service is of the highest standard.

5. Jeffersonville Golf Club – Jeffersonville, PA

Renowned golf course architect Donald Ross designed the Jefferson course in 1931. Jeffersonville Golf Club is only one of ten designed courses owned by a municipality. This 18-hole par 70 course stretches 6,443 yards from the back tees and its pin placements are carefully thought out, posing a challenge to the best golfers.
The club which is located in Norristown, hosts more than 35,000 rounds of golf annually. If you had a bit more time during your visit, you can take advantage of the club’s Golf clinics available for children and adults.
Jeffersonville offers a great golfing experience at a very reasonable price. Enjoy Hot Dogs, Burgers and Sandwiches at The Putters Bar & Grille.
