Phillies Release Pitcher Dontrelle Willis

BRADENTON, Fla — Dontrelle Willis’ attempt to reinvent himself as a relief pitcher ended, at least temporarily, on Friday, when the Phillies gave the 30-year-old left-hander his release after three Spring Training outings.
The well-traveled and often enigmatic Willis, who was 1-6 in 13 games as a starter with Cincinnati last season, was plaqued by inconsistency and arm soreness this spring, and admitted he didn’t adjust well to his new role in the bullpen.
“I felt we owed it to him to give him a chance to go somewhere else and get hooked up,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of the decision to cut Willie loose now rather than later in the spring.
