Phillies looking to sign free agent B.J. Upton?

The baseball off-season just started, but the Phillies are already knee-deep in it, as they look to fill out their roster for 2013. And according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman, they are hot on the trails of center fielder B.J. Upton, a free agent after spending his entire career with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Amaro said the team’s needs include a center fielder, a corner outfielder, a third baseman and bullpen help. But unlike in some previous years, the GM does not expect to be active early in free agency.

The Phils jumped the market to sign closer Jonathan Papelbon on Nov. 18, 2011, reliever Jose Contreras on Nov. 16, 2010 and infielder Placido Polanco on Dec. 3, 2009.

“I don’t see us doing anything very quick, I really don’t,” Amaro said. “I don’t know how all this is going to play out. There are a lot of moving parts for us, different pieces of the puzzle. We’re taking a really, really broad look at this thing.
