Padres Blank Phils
- Updated: September 16, 2014
The Phillies embarked on a west coast road trip last night against the Padres in San Diego. Jerome Williams got the call for the Phils against Andrew Cashner for the Pads.
Williams turned in yet another quality start, going 7.2 innings. He allowed no earned runs and struck out six. The lone run he allowed was unearned, and came in the second inning thanks to a fielding error by Cody Asche.
Catcher Rene Rivera led off with a double, and would advance to third. After a two out walk to Will Venable, Cashner stepped in and hit a ball to third that Asche could not handle. Cashner reached first, and Rivera scored the only run of the game.
Cashner took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, where with one out, Dom Brown beat the shift with a bunt single down the third base line. Cashner and his teammates did not appreciate the move by Brown, and Cashner & Brown exchanged words at inning’s end.
The Phillies would register only one other hit all night, falling to the Padres 1-0. They left just one runner on base, and had just three runners reach base total.
Cashner totaled seven strikeouts, two hits allowed and one walk in eight shut-out innings. Williams was saddled with the loss despite his solid outing. This loss is his second since joining the Phillies.
The Phils and Padres tangle again tonight at 10:10 pm eastern time. A.J. Burnett goes for the Fightins against Ian Kennedy for San Diego.
