Miguel Cotto Destroys Sergio Martinez

New York NY On Saturday June 7, the Boxing world came to Madison Square Garden for an exciting fight as Miguel Cotto challenged Sergio Martinez for the Martinez’s WBC Middleweight Championship. The last time a pay per view boxing match took place at Madison Square Garden was in 2011 when Miguel Cotto took on Antonio Margarito in December 2011 which Cotto won the fight. The fight takes place the eve of the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York; they are expecting a record crowd of more than 21,000 for this fight. Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs) last fight was a TKO win over Delvin Rodríguez back in October 2013, the reigning champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) enter the fight off a unanimous decision win over Martin Murray in April 2013. The Fight was broadcasted on HBO Pay Per View with Jim Lampley Max Kellerman and Roy Jones jr calling the action.
The first on the Pay Per View was a 10 round Junior middleweight fight between Andy Lee (32-2, 22 KOs) vs. John Jackson (18-1, 15 KOs), Jackson would drop Lee in round 1, but Lee would Knock out Jackson in the 5th round for the win. The 2nd fight was also a 10 round Junior Middleweight contest as Jorge Melendez (28-3-1, 26 KOs) vs. Javier Maciel (28-3, 20 KOs), this fight would go all 10 rounds with a lot of exciting action, the Judges scored it 96-92, 97-91, 94-94 all in favor for Javier Maciel by majority decision.
Before the Co Main Event started, there was a 10-count to honor the late Philadelphia fighter Matthew Saad Muhammad who passed away on May 25, 2014.
The Co Main Event was 10 round fight for vacant NABF featherweight title between Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (23-3-1, 19 KOs) vs. Marvin Sonsona (18-1-1, 15 KOs), This was a rematch from their first fight back on feb 27,2010 when Vazquez knocked out Sonsona in 4th round. Sonsona would drop Vazquez in round 1, Sonsona would lose a point in 6th round for a shot to back of head. The fight would go all 10 rounds and the judges scored it a Split Decision for Marvin Sonsona to win vacant NABF featherweight title.
The featured fight of the night was for the WBC Middlewight championship as Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) took on Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs)
Cotto Rocked Martinez with a nasty left Hook for 1st knockdown of fight, then Martinez down again after his Knee was blown out, then a down for a 3rd time in the first round, Martinez comes out for round 2 with a bloody right ear, cotto had everything going in this fight, Cotto would drop Martinez for a 4th time in the 9th round, Martinez would not come out for 10th round and the fight was over and Miguel Cotto would win the Middleweight championship and becoming the 1st Puerto Rican fighter to win Championships in 4 different weight classes
