Hartnell re-signs for 6 years
- Updated: August 21, 2012
Paul Holmgren is at it again. The Flyers announced on Monday afternoon that they had re-signed the left winger that was part of a dangerous top line of Hartnell, Claude Giroux, and Jaromir Jagr, who signed with Dallas earlier in the offseason. Holmgren had signed power forward Wayne Simmonds to a 6-year, roughly $24 million contract on August 15. According to Anthony SanFilippo, the contract should be worth about $5.5 million per year. Hartnell scored 37 goals last year, coupled with 30 assists for 67 points. He also scored 8 points in the playoffs. Upon the extension being announced, Hartnell stated via Twitter: “So happy to be in Philly to play in front of the best fans in the NHL. I would like to thank Mr. Snider and the entire Flyers organization.”
For some fans, this raises the question of when exactly franchise superstar Claude Giroux is allowed to be signed to an extension under the current extension. @MLHSMike answers this question on Twitter:
“you can negotiate an extension only in the last year of an existing deal”
Many Flyer fans are holding judgment until the future season is played, to see if the All-star Hartnell’s $4.75 million cap hit is worth it.
