Earl Pettis 1,000 Points: Leads Lasalle to 20 Wins
- Updated: March 4, 2012
Of the two seniors on the La Salle men’s basketball team, one is a high-scoring guard and the other a seldom-used reserve.
But both Earl Pettis and Matt Sheehan overcame similar hurdles to be where they were Saturday afternoon. Both helped contribute to La Salle’s first 20-win season since 1991-92.
The Explorers (20-11 overall, 9-7 Atlantic 10) accomplished that feat by beating visiting St. Bonaventure, 71-61, in Saturday’s regular-season finale at Tom Gola Arena, just hours after honoring Pettis and Sheehan on Senior Day.
Earl Pettis, in his final regular-season game at Tom Gola Arena, scored 16 points, including a three-pointer at the 17:11 mark, which put him over 1,000 points for his career.
Perhaps the best part for Pettis is that he will get to play one more game at Tom Gola Arena. La Salle, which earned the No. 7 seed in the league standings, will host 10th-seeded Richmond on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament.
Note: Earl Pettis is a Philadelphia local who won a Catholic League Championship with Neumann Goretti HighSchool.
