Did Jerry Sandusky Admit His Guilt To Bob Costas In Portion Of Interview NBC Never Aired?
- Updated: June 19, 2012
Remember that Rock Center interview Jerry Sandusky did with Bob Costas back in November? Remember how Sandusky creepily said things to Costas like “I enjoy young people”? Remember how it took Sandusky more than 16 seconds to answer a direct question about whether he’s “sexually attracted to young boys”? The interview—well, at least the segment that aired on the night of Nov. 14—lasted eight minutes. (We had condensed it down to four in the video you see above.) But the actual exchange, in its entirety, lasted for 36 uninterrupted minutes.
And now it turns out Sandusky may have incriminated himself further in a portion of the Q&A that never aired that night. NBC News reported today that prosecutors may introduce unaired portions of the interview as evidence sometime this week. Yes, there’s still a gag order in place, but on Friday, one of the network’s lawyers got a call from a prosecutor in the state attorney’s office who wanted NBC to authenticate a transcript. Which is as good an indication as any that the state is at least considering using the information in court in some way.
Today’s NBC report drew renewed attention to the interview, and to what had been omitted because of time contraints. This is the part that’s particularly worth noting, from a full transcript that had been published last November by the Centre County (Pa.) Daily Times:
19:00:28:00 But isn’t what you’re just describing the classic MO of many pedophiles? And that is that they gain the trust of young people, they don’t necessarily abuse every young person. There were hundreds, if not thousands of young boys you came into contact with, but there are allegations that at least eight of them were victimized. Many people believe there are more to come. So it’s entirely possible that you could’ve helped young boy A in some way that was not objectionable while horribly taking advantage of young boy B, C, D, and E. Isn’t that possible?
19:01:01:00 Well—you might think that. I don’t know. (LAUGHS) In terms of—my relationship with so many, many young people. I would—I would guess that there are many young people who would come forward. Many more young people who would come forward and say that my methods and—and what I had done for them made a very positive impact on their life. And I didn’t go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I’ve helped. There are many that I didn’t have—I hardly had any contact with who I have helped in many, many ways.
And I didn’t go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I’ve helped. There are many that I didn’t have—I hardly had any contact with who I have helped in many, many ways. Depending on how one chooses to read this, Sandusky either admitted he sexually abused children from The Second Mile—but not all of them!—or he was again just being that harmless big lug of an awkward grown kid his lawyers have been trying to convince us he really is.
