Defenseman Hal Gill retires from NHL after 16 seasons (The Associated Press)

Defenseman Hal Gill has retired from the NHL at age 40 after 16 seasons and a Stanley Cup title. At 6-foot-7 and 243 pounds, Gill was an imposing presence on the ice and a key part of Pittsburgh’s 2009 championship. He announced his retirement Thursday through the NHL Players’ Association. His NHL debut came with the Bruins in 1997.
