Chooch Staying Put
- Updated: November 21, 2013
Earlier this week the Phillies resigned fan favorite Carlos Ruiz to a three year, 26 million dollar contract to keep Chooch in red pinstripes.
The deal includes a team option for a fourth year.
It was a bit shocking the the Phils let the 35 year old catcher hit the open market with no real heir apparent waiting in the wings. Ruiz had drawn interest from the likes of Colorado and Boston among others.
With top prospect Tommy Joseph sidelined for much of last season with a concussion and fellow prospect Cameron Rupp only cracking the lineup in September, it was wise for Ruben Amaro, Jr. to bring Ruiz back.
Chooch hit .268 last season in 92 games following a suspension for an illegal substance. Though his offense is not where it was in 2012, Ruiz’s impact on the pitching staff and behind the dish cannot be overlooked.
He is one of the best defensive catchers in the game, and even at 35, figures to play a pivotal role in the team’s success moving forward.
